IFT17 attendees may have noticed some changes to this year’s Fun Run. The new Fun + Fitness virtual race has given attendees and nonattendees alike a chance to break out their sneakers and raise money for Feeding Tomorrow by completing a fitness activity of their choice at their leisure.
Under the virtual race setup, participating in the fundraiser was made easier than ever before. Starting May 1, anyone interested in raising money for Feeding Tomorrow scholarships simply registered online for a registration fee of $30. Participants have until June 30 to complete and log a fitness activity of any kind, including running, walking, swimming, biking, and more.
“A virtual race allows the IFT community that cares about the next generation to participate from anywhere each year,” says Brooke Switzer, director of Feeding Tomorrow. “It allows for friends and families to get involved, and it gives IFT sections, chapters, and divisions the chance to participate as a team. We aim to create a culture of giving back at Feeding Tomorrow, and why not get fit while you are at it?”
Vidita Deshpande, the Fun Run + Fitness chair, says that the new event format makes it even easier to link physical fitness with providing for students’ education. “Now with any fitness activity, you not only appreciate and respect your body but could also help secure the future of our food industry,” she says. “An hour-long fitness class, swimming session, yoga, and so on can help achieve a student their dream of being a future food scientist!”
For those so inclined, IFT offered a 30-minute yoga session Monday morning. A breakfast afterparty followed, where participants celebrated their achievements and picked up their medals and Fun Run T-shirts. A casual run and walk were scheduled as well, but in light of this week’s heat wave the organizers made the difficult decision to cancel the activity.
It’s not too late to contribute! Visit virtualstrides.com/feeding-tomorrow-virtual-run-fitness to register and complete your fitness activity by June 30 to receive an electronic race bib, medal, and a digital goody bag contributed by sponsors and corporate partners.
