Student Program

You’ve determined the right profession for you and now you want to explore all it has to offer. There is no better way to do this than to attend IFT’s FIRST virtual event. From the location of your choosing, you can immerse yourself and fully explore, network, and learn surrounded by students and professionals just like you who are advancing the science of food.

Graduates and undergraduate students can take advantage of the special programs designed by the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association (IFTSA) volunteers in addition to the full FIRST experience.

Consider this your “how to” guide and chance to ask questions to maximize your experience at FIRST. IFT Student Association leaders will guide you through what to expect during this digital experience and connect you with great opportunities to get engaged.

Student Food Innovators

Monday, July 19 and Tuesday, July 20 

The Student Food Innovators program will provide all student attendees with an opportunity to network and collaborate with their peers and professional mentors while also exploring the FIRST. Students will choose a case study representing six key areas of our global food system, then will be organized into teams and challenged to develop solutions using the vast knowledge available through scientific sessions and components of FIRST. 

Through this experience, students will harness the power and scale of the FIRST to network with peers and professionals, discover solutions, and ultimately understand how global collaboration and innovation are essential to advancing the science of the food.  

Participating in the program is a two-step process:

  1. First, you must be registered for FIRST to participate. Special student discounts and full registration scholarships available. Don’t delay. Register today.

  2. Then, you must reserve your Student Food Innovators Program spot to later than July 11at 11:59 p.m. CT.


IFTSA College Bowl Finals

Tuesday, July 20; 7 p.m. CT

College Bowl is back! Join us for the final rounds of the competition taking place for the first time virtually via YouTube (the link will be posted here and on IFT’s social channels the day of the event). 

The eight finalists this year are:  

  • University of Maryland 
  • The Ohio State University 
  • Cornell University 
  • University of Wisconsin-Madison 
  • University of California-Davis
  • California Polytechnic State University, San Lui Obispo
  • Louisiana State University 
  • University of Georgia

IFTSA Closing Ceremony

Wednesday, July 21; 12 p.m. CT 

IFTSA’s virtual Closing Ceremony will celebrate the achievements of students in the science of food throughout this year. Join to witness the announcement of our competition winners and award recipients as well as celebrate all of our amazing volunteers.
