Graduate students Alexander Joseph Taylor from the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign and& Genesis Gisselle Guerra Gaitan from Louisiana State University will compete for top honors in the 2019 IFT Student Association (IFTSA) Thesis Video Competition sponsored by Campden BRI.

Six forward-thinking entrepreneurs pitched their companies in the inaugural Food Disruption Challenge competition at IFT18 on Tuesday morning.

IFT President Cindy Stewart kicked off IFT18 on Sunday, July 15, with a ceremony celebrating leaders and innovators who are promoting progress in the science of food. 

Student winners in the division poster competition were recognized on Sunday afternoon at the Phi Tau Sigma and IFT Division Competition Awards Ceremony in McCormick Place.

First given in 1970, the IFT Fellow designation recognizes exemplary contributions to the field of food science and technology. Whether working in industry, academia, or the regulatory area, IFT Fellows have shaped the science of food in immeasurably valuable ways.

The three winning innovations enhance food safety, product quality and shelf life.

This year, Developing Solutions for Developing Countries Competition participants have been asked to develop a product for people living in regions of Southern and Eastern Africa, where two consecutive years of drought have resulted in rising food prices and increased food insecurity and malnutrition.

In its first year, the IFTSA Smart Snacks for Kids Competition challenges students to develop a fun and nutritious food or beverage product targeted at kids and/or teens.

Graduate students Molly Higgins of Pennsylvania State University, Abbey Thiel from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and Anna Waller of the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign will compete for top honors in the 2018 IFT Student Association (IFTSA) Thesis Video Competition sponsored by Campden BRI.
